Australia’s Optus mulls selling sports streaming service to Nine, AFR reports

(Reuters) – Singapore Telecommunications-owned Optus, Australia’s No. 2 telecom carrier, is looking to sell its sports streaming platform Optus Sport to media house Nine Entertainment, the Australian Financial Review (AFR) reported on Monday.

A potential deal would grant streaming rights for the English Premier League to Nine’s local streaming service Stan, while allowing Optus to focus on its core telecom assets, the report said, citing sources with knowledge of the talks.

Optus, Nine Entertainment and SingTel did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comments.

The AFR report comes after DAZN’s A$3.4 billion ($2.11 billion) buyout of cable-TV platform Foxtel last month, which will allow the British-owned sports network to enter the Australian market with rights to the Australian Football League and the National Rugby League.

($1 = 1.6100 Australian dollars)
